The Granny: It’s More Than Just a Square, Part 3

This week’s granny motif is the octagon. This is a great shape that makes a beautiful crochet piece. One slight drawback is that when these eight-sided motifs are joined together, it creates large, open spaces between them.

Depending on what the project is and how large the octagon motifs are, this can be a great look. But if, for example, you want your cozy afghan to not be quite so “holey,” an often easy solution to filling these open spaces (depending on the pattern) is to crochet smaller motifs using only the first few rounds of the large octagon motif (while it’s still square – before it changes to eight corners). If the motif is still a little too small to fill the open space, work another round of even stitches to bring it up to size. The fill-in motifs can be made in matching colors or in contrasting or solid colors for a more eye-catching look.

If the center of your octagon motif is a large flower, the flower alone often makes a lovely fill-in motif for the open spaces. The petal tips can easily be joined with a slip stitch to the four sides and/or corners of the open spaces as the flowers are worked.

Enjoy exploring the versatility of the eye-catching octagon granny motif!
