Lend a new twist to an old favorite. Basic shells take a whole new look worked in a two-tone pattern with two strands of yarn.

Size
49 1/2" x 70 1/2" not in-cluding Fringe.

Materials

  • *Worsted-weight yarn -- 54 oz. green and 10 oz. black;
  • P crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge
With 2 strands green held together, 2 shells and one ch-1 sp worked in pattern = 5 1/2"; 4 pattern rows = 3".

Afghan
NOTE: For shell, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch or ch sp.
Row 1: With 2 strands green held together, ch 111, shell in 6th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip next 5 chs, shell in next ch) 17 times, skip next 2 chs, dc in last ch, turn, fasten off (18 shells, 17 ch sps, 2 dc).
NOTE: For V-stitch (V-st), (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch or st.
Row 2: Join one strand black with sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, (sc in next ch sp, sc in next st, skip next st; working in front of next ch sp, V-st in 3rd skipped ch on last row, skip next st, sc in next st) 17 times, sc in next ch sp, sc in each of last 3 sts, turn, fasten off (58 sc, 17 V-sts).
Row 3: Join 2 strands green with sl st in first st, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, (ch 1, shell in ch sp of next V-st) 17 times, ch 1, skip next 4 sts, 3 dc in last st, turn, fasten off.
Row 4: Join one strand black with sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts; working in front of next ch sp, skip next 2 unworked sts on row before last, V-st in next st, (skip next st on last row, sc in next st, sc in next ch sp, sc in next st, skip next st; working in front of next ch sp, V-st in center st of next 3-sc group on row before last) 17 times, sc in each of last 3 sts, turn, fasten off.
Row 5: Join 2 strands green with sl st in first st, ch 3, shell in next V-st, (ch 1, shell in next V-st) 17 times, skip next 2 sts, dc in last st, turn, fasten off.
Row 6: Join one strand black with sc in first st, sc in each of next 2 sts, (sc in next ch sp, sc in next st, skip next st; working in front of next ch sp, V-st in 2nd skipped st on row before last, skip next st on last row, sc in next st) 17 times, sc in next ch sp, sc in each of last 3 sts, turn, fasten off.
Rows 7-92: Repeat rows 3-6 consecutively, ending with row 4.
Row 93: Join 2 strands green with sl st in first st, ch 3, shell in next V-st, (skip next st, sc in next st, skip next st, shell in next V-st) across to last 3 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in last st, turn, fasten off.

Fringe
For each Fringe, cut 5 strands green each 16" long. Holding all 5 strands together, fold in half, insert hook in st or ch sp, draw fold through, draw all loose ends through fold, tighten. Trim ends.
Fringe in each sc and in each ch sp across last row of Afghan; Fringe in ch at base of each dc, each shell and in center ch of each ch sp across row 1 of Afghan.
