A lush green meadow dancing with forget-me-nots surrounds brilliant violets centered on linen circles.

Materials

  • Crochet cotton size 30 (50 grams per ball): 1 ball dark green
  • Crochet cotton size 10 : Small amount each lilac, purple, yellow and light blue
  • Size 10 steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Size 7 steel crochet hook
  • 1 yd ecru linen
  • Sewing needle and ecru and dark green sewing thread
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge
Linen circle with Rnds 1-4 = 3 inches in diameter, using size 30 cotton and smaller hook
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes
Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.
Before beg, cut 12 (2 3/8-inch-diameter) linen circles. On each circle, fold 1/8 to WS all around edge, then fold 1/8 inch again to WS. Hemstitch in place with sewing needle and ecru sewing thread.

Pattern Stitches
V-st: [Dc, ch 5, dc] in indicated sp or st.
Beg V-st: [Ch 8, dc] in indicated sp or st.
Cl: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, 3 tr in indicated sp or st, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.
Beg cl: Ch 3, holding back on hook last lp of each st, 2 tr in same sp or st as ch-3, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook.
Cl shell: [Cl, ch 6, cl] in indicated sp or st.
Beg cl shell: [Beg cl, ch 6, cl] in indicated sp or st.
Joining cl shell (jcl shell): [Cl, ch 3, sl st in corresponding cl shell sp on previous motif, ch 3, cl] in indicated sp or st on working motif.
Beg jcl shell: [Beg cl, ch 3, sl st in corresponding cl shell sp on previous motif, ch 3, cl] in indicated sp or st on working motif.
Joined clusters (jcl): Holding back on hook last lp of each st, 3 tr in each of 2 indicated sps, yo, draw through all 7 lps on hook.

First Linen Circle Motif
Rnd 1: With smaller hook and RS facing, attach dark green with a sl st approximately 1/8 inch in from edge of any linen circle, ch 1, beg in same place, work 96 sc evenly sp around edge, join in beg sc. (96 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, [ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in next sc] rep around, ending with ch 2, dc in beg sc to form last ch-5 sp. (24 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 3: Beg V-st in sp just formed, V-st in each rem sp around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-8. (24 V-sts)
Rnd 4: Sl st in each of first 2 chs of next V-st sp, beg cl shell in same V-st sp, cl shell in each rem V-st sp around, join in top of beg cl, fasten off.

Second Linen Circle Motif
Rnds 1-3: Rep Rnds 1-3 of first linen circle motif.
Rnd 4: Sl st in each of first 2 chs of next V-st sp, beg jcl shell in same V-st sp to any cl shell sp on previous motif, [jcl shell in next V-st sp to next cl shell sp on previous motif] 3 times (1 side joined), cl shell in each rem V-st sp around, join in top of beg cl, fasten off.

Rem Linen Circle Motifs
Make 10
Rnds 1-4: Rep Rnds 1-4 of 2nd linen circle motif, joining on as many sides as necessary to form a rectangle of 3 rows of 4 motifs each and leaving 2 cl shells unjoined between each joined side.

Fill-In Motif
Make 6
With smaller hook and RS facing, attach dark green with a sl st in 2nd free cl shell sp to the right on any linen circle motif at intersection of any 4 linen circle motifs, beg cl in same sp, beg cl in top of beg cl just made, *cl in next free cl shell sp on same motif, cl in first free cl shell sp on next linen circle motif, beg cl in top of cl just made, rep from * around, ending with cl in next free cl shell sp on same motif, join in top of beg cl, fasten off.

Border
Rnd 1: With RS facing, using smaller hook, beg on first linen circle motif to the left of upper right-hand corner linen circle motif, attach dark green with a sl st in first free shell sp after jcl shell sp, beg cl in same sp, *[ch 8, jcl over same sp and next sp] 7 times, **ch 8, jcl over same sp and next ch-3 sp, ch 3, jcl over next ch-3 sp on next linen circle motif and next sp **, rep from * across to next corner linen circle motif, [ch 8, jcl over same sp and next sp] 13 times, rep from ** to ** once, rep from * around, ending with ch 3, cl in next ch-3 sp on next linen circle motif, join in top of beg cl.
Rnd 2: Sl st in each of next 8 chs, sl st in top of next jcl, beg cl shell in same st as last sl st made, *[ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, cl shell in top of next jcl] 6 times, **ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook, sk [ch 8, jcl, ch 3, jcl, ch 8], cl shell over next jcl on next linen circle motif **, rep from * across to next corner linen circle motif, [ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, cl shell in top of next jcl] 12 times, rep from ** to ** once, rep from * around, ending with ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook, sk [ch 8, jcl, ch 3, jcl, ch 8], join in top of beg cl, fasten off.

Violet
Make 12
Rnd 1 (RS): With larger hook and lilac, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in front lp only of beg sc. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: [Ch 3, sl st in front lp only of next sc] rep around, ending with ch 3, sl st in front lp only of st at base of beg ch-3, fasten off. (6 petals)
Rnd 3: With RS facing, using larger hook, attach purple with a sl st in back lp only of first sc of Rnd 1, *[ch 3, 2 tr, ch 3, sl st] in same st, sl st in back lp only of next sc, rep from * around, fasten off. (6 petals)

Forget-Me-Not
Make 16
Rnd 1: With larger hook and light blue, ch 1 (center ch), [ch 3, dc, ch 3, sl st] 5 times in center ch, fasten off.

Finishing
With tapestry needle and yellow, work French knot in center of each violet and each forget-me-not.
With sewing needle and ecru sewing thread, sew 1 violet to center of each linen circle motif.

With sewing needle and dark green sewing thread, using photo as a guide, sew forget-me-nots at intersections of linen circle motifs.
