Circle-in-a-Square Motif Pillow
Stitch this fun-to-make pillow from leftover yarns and a background color of your choice. It's old-fashioned yet thoroughly modern.

Size
Fits 16-inch-square pillow form
Materials
- Medium (worsted) weight yarn (weight category 4):
- small amounts scrap colors for block centers
- 3 oz white or background color of your choice
- Size H hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- 16-inch pillow form
Gauge
Each block is about 3 1/2 inches across.
Instructions
Block
Make 32 (16 each for front and back)
Rnd 1: With color, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (16 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join. Fasten off. (32 dc)
Rnd 3: Join white with sl st in any st, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st, **[ch 1, skip next st, sc in each of next 2 sts] 2 times, ch 1, skip next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, join in top of ch-3. Fasten off.
Assemble blocks
For front and back of pillow, sew or crochet blocks together in 4 x 4 grid. To sew blocks together, hold two blocks right sides together matching stitches, and whipstitch together. To crochet blocks together, hold two blocks right sides together matching stitches, and slip stitch or single crochet together.
Border (work around front and back of pillow)
Join white with sc in any st or ch-sp; sc in each st and in each ch-sp around with 3 sc in each corner, join. Fasten off.
Assemble pillow
Holding front and back of pillow wrong sides together, working through both thicknesses and inserting pillow form before round is complete, join white with sc in any st, sc in each st around with 3 sc in corners, join. Fasten off.
