Knit & Crochet Heritage Museum: A Work in Progress

Are you passionate about crochet or knitting? Are you proud of the needlework legacy passed down to you from talented family members? If your answer is "yes," then you will want to follow the progress of an amazing project. A symposium was held recently in Madison, Wis., to brainstorm the concept of starting a knit and crochet museum.

During the weekend, participants explored many aspects of this passionate calling conceived by Karen Kendrick-Hands of Madison. A panel of experts made the case for collecting, preserving, researching and sharing our crochet and knit heritage. Co-hosted by the Wisconsin Historical Society and sponsored in part by the Yarn Group of the National Needlework Association, designers, passionate practitioners and many who are interested in preserving the heritage of crochet and knitting attended!

The weekend event, in which knitters far out-numbered crocheters, brought together distinguished presenters from museums, academia and the yarn industry. Lectures and slide presentations showed the image of knitting and crochet in the popular media over the centuries, advice on how to start a museum, and important information about the current trend to develop virtual museums and collections.

By the end of the weekend, the name of this work-in-progress had been changed to International Center for Knit and Crochet, a seven-member board had been formed, and the decision was made to pursue 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Crocheters, I urge you to get involved whatever your interest in crochet might be. Put your money where your mouth is and be willing to carry the weight of your conviction. If you want crochet to be included and to even be in the spotlight at this important time when it is prestigious and highly popular, speak up and offer to help in whatever capacity you can. Share your gift of creativity!
