Lollipop Covers

Add lollipop treats cleverly disguised as adorable bunnies, ducks and decorated eggs to the kids' Easter baskets with these whimsical, quick-to-stitch covers.

Finished Size
Bodies are 2-2 1/2 inches across and Egg is 3 inches across

Materials

  • Medium (worsted) weight yarn: 1 oz/50 yds/28.4g light blue 1/2 oz/25 yds/14.2g each white, light yellow, orange, light pink, dark pink, dark yellow and dark blue
  • Size G/6/4mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • 3 lollipops
  • 2 wiggle eyes, size 7mm
  • Ribbon:
    1/8-inch-wide: 11 inches purple
    1/8-inch-wide: 11 inches yellow
  • Craft glue or hot-glue gun

Gauge

4 sts = 1 inch; 4 sc rows = 1 inch

Special Stitch

Picot: Ch 2, sc in second ch from hook

Pattern Notes

  • Beginning chain-3 counts as first double crochet.
  • Join with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Instructions

Basic Body
Side (make 2)

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3, join in first ch to form ring, ch 3, 15 dc in ring, do not join. (16 dc)
  • Rnd 2: [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] around, join in beg sc. Fasten off. (24 sc)
  • Hold Body Sides WS tog, matching sts, sew tog through back lps (see Stitch Guide), leaving last 6 sts unsewn for lollipop opening.

Duck

Body

With light yellow, work Basic Body

Beak

  • With orange, ch 3, join in beg ch to form ring, ch 1, (2 sc, hdc, ch 3, sl st in top of last st made, hdc, 2 sc) in ring. Fasten off.
  • Tack to center of rnd 1 on Body. Glue two wiggle eyes centered above Beak 1/4 inch apart.

Topknot

  • With orange, join with sc in rem lp of center top st on Body, (hdc, ch 3, sl st in top of last st made, hdc, sc) in same st. Fasten off.
  • Tie yellow ribbon into a bow and tack to bottom of Body below Beak (see photo).
  • Insert lollipop into Body opening.

Bunny

Body

With white, work Basic Body.

Ear (make 2)

  • Working in rem lps of 4 sts at center top of Body, join white in first st, *ch 6, (sl st, ch 2, sc) in second ch from hook, sc in each of last 4 chs, sl st in same st on Body*, sl st in each of next 3 sts on Body, rep between * once. Fasten off.
  • For nose, use light pink to embroider French knot (see illustration) on center of rnd 1 on Body. With light pink, straight stitch (see illustration) three whiskers on each side of nose.
  • Using dark blue, add two French knot eyes centered above nose 1/4 inch apart.
  • Tie purple ribbon into a bow and tack to bottom of Body (see photo).
  • Insert lollipop into Body opening.

Egg

Side (make 2)

  • Row 1: With light blue, ch 4, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (3 sc)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (5 sc)
  • Rows 3 & 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across with 2 sc in last st, turn. (7, 9 sc)
  • Rows 5-8: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
  • Rows 9-11: Ch 1, sk first st, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in last 2 sts. Fasten off at end of last row. (7, 5, 3 sc)

Small Stripe (make 1 dark pink, make 1 light yellow)

  • [Picot (see Special Stitches)] 4 times. Fasten off.
  • For front, sew one Stripe over row 3 of one Egg Side.
  • Sew other Stripe across row 9.

Large Stripe

  • With dark blue, [picot] 5 times. Fasten off.
  • Sew Large Stripe over row 6 of Egg front.
  • With French knot, using dark blue for dark pink Stripe, dark yellow for dark blue Stripe and dark pink for light yellow Stripe, embroider center of each picot.
  • Hold Egg Sides WS tog with front facing you, matching sts, working through both thicknesses, join light blue in end of row 1, sc in end of each row across, sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next st, sc in end of each row across, working on front only in starting ch on opposite side of row 1, sc in first ch, 5 sc in next ch, sc last ch, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
  • Insert lollipop into Body opening.
