Chatting With Kristi Simpson

Kristi Simpson is a well-known designer, author and online teacher. Today she shares with us her crochet career journey and offers valuable crochet tips as well! We've also included a discount on her newest class, Learn Seaming Techniques for Crochet, -- keep reading to find the keycode!

Brenda: When did you learn to crochet?

Kristi: My daughter received a Learn to Crochet kit one Christmas and she decided that I needed to teach her. I taught myself so that I could teach her and I LOVED it! My husband encouraged me to design a range of items, submit my ideas and just run full force with it!

My first project was a cute tote, and even though it was uneven and used scrap yarn, I thought it was beautiful! I loved that I had made something and that it was useful!

Brenda: How did you become a designer, teacher and author?

Kristi: I released my first pattern online in February 2010 and worked really hard to have cute and functional designs. I now have over 600+ designs in my collection with a range from baby blankets to adult slippers. My first book was released in 2013. Twenty-plus books later, I have multiple books in Wal-Mart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and other major stores. I am also a video instructor with Annie's and just had my second video released. I just love crocheting!

Brenda: What inspires you the most when you're designing?

Kristi: Yarn. Period. Sometimes it's texture and sometimes it's how it works up in the pattern. Other times I'm drawn in by the color combinations.

Brenda: What are your favorite fibers to work with?

Kristi: I first began working with what I knew, which was worsted-weight acrylic. Everything felt the same and looked the same. My husband found some fuzzy, soft yarn and challenged me to work with it. Well, I then challenged his checkbook because I found I loved trying different yarns! If I could challenge any crocheter, it would be to try all weights of yarn from lace to chunky, and different fibers -- everything from alpaca to superwash merino. Try it all!

Brenda: I really enjoyed your Learn Seaming Techniques for Crochet video class! What advice do you have for those who are just learning how to seam projects together?

Kristi: My biggest tip for learning how to seam is to just take your time. Breathe! It isn't hard. It just "seams" that way! I was intimidated as a beginner when it came to seaming projects. I avoided them. Seriously. But when I figured out how simple the different techniques were, I felt silly for waiting. But that's where my video comes into play. Don't wait -- jump in and let ME teach you!

One of my most recent published patterns in Crochet! magazine is called The Diane Vest. It is great for beginners and requires basic seaming. You should check it out!
