Hairpin Lace Doily

Materials

  • Crochet cotton size 10* (400 yds per skein): 1 skein ecru
  • Size 4 steel crochet hook
  • 2"-wide hairpin lace fork

Gauge

Work evenly and consistently

Pattern Note

Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.

Pattern Stitches

Hairpin lace strip: Holding left fork with thumb and forefinger of left hand, make sl knot over right prong with the knot in the center. Pass the thread behind the left prong (Fig. 1).

Turn fork from right to left so that thread passes behind both prongs of the fork. Insert hook under front strand; with right hand, draw through a lp; with right hand, draw through 1 lp (Fig. 2).

Take hook (with lp still on it) over and behind right prong, turn fork from right to left as before (Fig. 3).

Insert hook under front thread of lp on left prong, work a sc (Fig. 4).

When fork is filled with lps, sl off all but last few lps and continue. For ease in counting, mark every 10th or 20th lp with safety pin or other small marker as lps are removed.

2-dc cl: Holding last lp of each dc on hook, 2 dc in indicated st or sp, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook.

3-dc cl: Holding last lp of each dc on hook, 3 dc in indicated st or sp, yo and draw through all 4 lps on hook.

Center Motif

Hairpin lace strip: Make strip with 48 lps on each side. Tie lps on 1 side tog with 6" piece of cotton.

Tie ends of strip tog to form circular center.

Rnd 1 (RS): Attach thread with a sl st in 3 lps held tog on outer side of circle, *[sc, ch 5, sc] in same 3 lps held tog, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, rep from * around, join in beg sc.

Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-5 sp, ch 3, 2-dc cl in same sp, ch 4, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp as previous dc cl, ch 3, *3-dc cl in next ch-5 sp, ch 4, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp as previous dc cl, ch 3, rep from * around, join in top of beg 2-dc cl, fasten off.

Outer Strip

Hairpin lace strip: Make strip with 192 lps on each side; tie ends to form circle.

Rnd 3: With RS facing, attach thread with a sl st in 6 lps held tog on inner side of cir­cle, *[sc in same place, ch 5, sc] in 6 lps held tog, ch 3, sl st in next 6 lps held tog, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook, sl st in same 6 lps, ch 3, rep from * around, join in beg sc.

Joining to doily center

Rnd 4: Sl st in ch-5 sp, ch 3, 2-dc cl in same ch-5 sp, ch 2, sl st in corresponding ch-4 sp of doily center, ch 2, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp, ch 7, *3-dc cl in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, sl st in corre­sponding ch-4 sp of doily center, ch 2, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp, ch 7, rep from * around, join in top of beg 2-dc cl, fasten off.

Edging

Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach thread with a sl st in 4 lps held tog on outer edge of strip, *[sc, ch 5, sc] in 4 lps held tog, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, rep from * around, join in beg sc.

Rnd 2: Sl st in ch-5 sp, ch 3, 2-dc cl in same sp, ch 4, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp as previous dc cl, ch 3, *3-dc cl in next ch-5 sp, ch 4, 2-dc cl in 4th ch from hook, 3-dc cl in same ch-5 sp, ch 3, rep from * around, join in top of beg 2-dc cl, fasten off.
