March Is National Crochet Month

Mail Bag

The Crochet Guild of America started National Crochet Week in 1999 as a way to celebrate our beloved craft and to let others know about the guild. That year, President Pam Oddi designed a pattern as a gift to every member. It was a filet crochet chart used to make a bookmark that read "I Love Crochet." Crocheters had fun, and the celebration blossomed. Now it is a whole month long, and we call it National Crochet Month. There's so much to celebrate!

I always think of Ireland in March, and the roots from which our crochet came. Coincidentally, I came upon an article online from the Irish Independent, which comes to us from Dublin, Ireland. The article described the release by Google of its "annual survey of the top trending and most searched items" of 2012. The survey offers "a revealing insight into our preoccupations that is sometimes quirky and surprising." The Google list of "How to" searches revealed that How to Crochet is in the top-10 list along with How to Draw, How to Knit and How to Meditate.

What will you do to celebrate National Crochet Month? The best gift you can give a child is to teach one to crochet. Buy yourself a new accessory; give a crocheted gift to a friend. There are so many ways to say "I love crochet!" during March and every day of the year!

This year, Amy and Donna at Crochetville have planned a unique and fun event for all crocheters to treat themselves during National Crochet Month. It's called A Tour through Crochet Country, and you will have the opportunity to visit with at least 44 of your favorite crochet designers during the month of March (the list is continuing to grow as we go to print).

With scheduled stops to see one or two designers per day, each one will have something special and unique to share with you. You might get a behind-the-scenes tour of a design studio. You might get a sneak peek into a designer’s creative design process. Perhaps you’ll see a free crochet pattern waiting for you to download or a stitch or special technique tutorial.

This tour is these fine ladies’ way of saying thank you to crocheters everywhere for supporting the crochet community with your purchases of individual patterns, books, magazines, crochet hooks and tools, yarn, and thread. We hope you enjoy what they have to share with you this month! To join in the fun, go to Crochetville.com.
