Man's Diamond Lapghan & Pillow

Accessorize your "man cave" with the masculine tones of gray and black in this striking afghan designed by Rena V. Stevens. The large, easy, diamond-shaped motifs are crocheted together for even faster results!

Stitched in easy-care worsted-weight yarn, this 35 x 43 1/2-inch lapghan and 17-inch-square matching pillow are as pretty as they are practical.

  • TLC Heathers medium (worsted) weight yarn (5 oz/260 yds/141g per skein): 1 skein #2480 charcoal
  • Size J/10/6mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Row 1 (RS): With millennium, ch 4, hdc in 4th ch from hook, turn.

Note: Remainder of piece is worked in back lps (see Stitch Guide).

Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), hdc in first hdc, hdc in next ch, 2 hdc in next ch, turn. (5 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, hdc in first hdc, hdc in each hdc across to last hdc, 2 hdc in last hdc, turn. (7 sts)

Rows 4-12: Rep row 3. (25 sts at end of last row)

Note: Mark both ends of row 12 as midpoint of Motif.

Row 13: Ch 3, hdc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 hdc, hdc in each hdc across to last 2 hdc, sk next hdc, hdc in last hdc, turn. (23 sts)

Rows 14-22: Rep row 13. (5 sts at end of last row)

Row 23: Ch 3, hdc dec in next 2 hdc, sk next hdc, hdc in last hdc, turn. (3 sts)

Row 24: Ch 1, sk first 2 hdc, hdc in last hdc. Fasten off.

Edging

Hold Motif with RS facing, join (see Pattern Notes) charcoal in the end of row 13, ch 6 (see Pattern Notes), *[dc in next row, ch 1] 11 times, dc in 1 lp at edge of point, ch 1, (tr, ch 2, dtr -- see Stitch Guide, ch 2, tr) in point, ch 1, dc in 1 lp at opposite edge of same point, ch 1, [dc in next row, ch 1] 10 times **, dc in next row, ch 3, [dc in next row, ch 1] 11 times, rep from * once, ending rep at **, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-6. Fasten off.

Assembly

Referring to diagram for placement, Join Motifs in diagonal strips. To join Motifs, hold 2 Motifs with WS tog, matching top point of front Motif to marked ch-3 sp of back Motif, working through both thicknesses at same time in ends of matching rows, with millennium, make slip knot on hook, sc in dtr at point of front Motif and ch-3 sp of back Motif, sc in same sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-2 sp on front Motif and in same ch-3 sp on back Motif, ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp on front Motif and in next ch-1 sp on back Motif, ch 1, [sc in next ch-1 sp on both Motifs, ch 1] 11 times, sc in next ch-1 sp on front Motif and in next ch-2 sp on back Motif, ch 1, sc in next ch-3 sp of front Motif and in same ch-2 sp of back Motif, ch 1, 3 sc in same ch-3 sp of front Motif and in next dtr of back Motif. Fasten off.

Join strips in same manner, working 1 sc instead of 2 sc in joining sts wherever they occupy corresponding sts at joinings.

Hold piece with RS and point of bottom Motif at top, join charcoal in end of row 1, ch 1, sc in same sp, picot (see Special Stitches), working in ends of rows of Motifs, [sc in next row, picot] 22 times, (sc, lg picot -- see Special Stitches, sc) in end of point, [sc in next row, picot] 23 times, (sc, lg picot, sc) in end of point, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

Back

With charcoal, work same as Front.

Pillow Assembly

Referring to photo for placement, place joined Motifs on Front. Holding millennium beneath work, sl st loosely alternately around edges of Motifs, working in same sps as Edging sts.

Hold Front and Back with WS tog and Front facing, working through both thicknesses at same time, join charcoal with sc in end of first row in bottom right-hand corner, picot, sc in same sp, picot, working across side in ends of rows, *sc in next row, picot, rep from * across to last row, (sc, lg picot) twice in last row, working across next side in sps between sts, **sk next 2 dc, sc in next sp, picot, rep from ** across to 2nd sp from next corner, sk next 2 dc, (sc, lg picot) twice in last sp, working across side in ends of rows, ***sc in next row, picot, rep from *** across to last row, (sc, lg picot) twice in last row, working across next side in sps between sts, ****sk next 2 dc, sc in next sp, picot, rep from **** across to beg sc, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
